What's Involved?

First, you'll need an address on the Internet. This is referred to as a Domain Name. Names may be purchased ($15-35 annually) through any accredited ICANN registrar. After purchasing a domain name, a site will need to be designed (CRB Designs provides this service for a one-time fee based on the number of pages and functionality of the site), and then obtain a hosting provider. Web site hosting usually involves a monthly fee paid to the provider. Maintenance of the website (adding products, pages, etc.) can either be done by the company that designs your site or some savvy users will take on the maintenance themselves. This reduces the residual payments, but requires knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, etc.

If e-commerce is your goal, there are many options regarding merchant accounts, credit card processing (bank and transaction fees vary).
